The first step is the development of a robotic reconnaissance aircraft capable of flying at high altitude for up to 36 hours, while providing constant information about what is happening far below.

That aircraft, known as Global Hawk, has now clocked up 70 sorties, including a crossing of the Atlantic Ocean.

But its most impressive mission ended in South Australia last night after Global Hawk flew across the Pacific from California.
